Rupert Murdoch, an Australian-American global media tycoon, is the major shareholder, chairman, and managing director of the media conglomerate News Corporation. Some of the papers owned by News Corporation are biased against animal issues and activists. They print defamatory and inaccurate stories that are anti-animal and anti-activist, particularly on the issue of live animal export. Murdoch is a powerful man whose voice could end the unnecessary suffering of millions of animals. We must get his attention and demand he speak out!

Please join LCA in protesting live animal export at the News Corporation's Annual General Meeting on Friday, October 21, 2011. LCA is planning civil disobedience (details to be provided at the training) to demand that Murdoch watch the horrifying footage of live animal export, take an official stance against live animal export, and release a statement to the media condemning live animal export. If you are not comfortable taking part in civil disobedience LCA urges you to still attend the protest and show you support a ban on live animal export.
The week prior to the protest Chris DeRose, President and founder of LCA, will conduct a training on civil disobedience. For over three decades, Chris DeRose has been an international leader in the animal rights movement. He has lead and participated in civil disobedience countless times. This training will answer all of your questions and prepare you to use civil disobedience successfully to fight for the animals.

Australia is the world's largest exporter of live animals for slaughter. Every year millions of Australian Cattle, Sheep, and Goats are exported live to be killed in the Middle East, South East Asia, North Africa, China, Mexico, and the Philippines - where animal welfare laws do not exist to protect them. Tens of thousands of animals die before reaching their destination. Those who survive the grueling journey are transported, handled, and slaughtered in horrific ways. A majority of the animals will have their throats cut while they are fully conscious, leading to prolonged pain, terror, and anguishing death.

Multi tiered ships cage the animals on the voyage overseas to their cruel deaths. The decks are often enclosed without adequate ventilation and decks that are open sided have no climate control and leave the animals exposed to extreme weather conditions. Voyages can last up to 24 days and cages are almost never cleaned, leaving the animals to stand in their own urine and feces. A shipboard mortality rate of 1-1.5% is considered acceptable in the industry.

The animals who survived the hellish journey will then be subjected to a cruel and inhumane death. Undercover video shows terrified animals slipping on the blood covered floors as they are forced to watch their companions slaughtered. Victims are dragged to the slaughter area by a hind leg and hit and kicked to the ground, frequently breaking bones in the process. Video also shows slaughter workers fighting to control frightened animals by slashing leg tendons, smashing knees with hammers, tail breaking, and eye gouging. One animal with a broken leg was tortured for 26 minutes before being killed.

The evidence gathered against Australia's live trade during investigations over the last eight years is damning. No amount of profit or excuses can justify Australia's continued involvement in live animal export and the associated cruelty inflicted on animals. If you care about animals then please help LCA show the Australian government that this inhumane treatment of animals is unacceptable and help end this cruel trade once and for all.

Dear Ms. Gillard,
After witnessing the horrendous treatment of Australian cattle in Indonesia, I am appalled that this cruelty has been allowed to continue for so long.
While the live export industry turns a blind eye to animal cruelty, the distressing images of animals being brutalized has reached US soil. Australia is gaining international attention and sending the message to other nations that Australia views abuse as acceptable treatment of animals.The only way to improve Australia's reputation with the rest of the world is to ban the live export of animals.
The animal abuse documented in undercover investigations would never be permitted on Australian soil, yet for decades the industry has continued to send live animals to countries regardless of the cruelty that awaits them.
Time and time again, the live export industry has proven that it cannot be trusted to uphold animal welfare or be honest with the Australian public and the world.
