Demolition of The Courtesy Hotel, West Hempstead, NY
The Courtesy Hotel was anything but a courtesy to the neighborhood. It was a scandalous, seedy motel frequented by drug addicts, prostitutes and deviants. There had been numerous rapes there, overdoses and who knows what else. It was not just an eyesore, it was disgusting. Everyone knew about the Courtesy and everyone wanted it gone, for years. Well, that day finally came, on May 12th, 2011. I stopped by the watch it go, but I was a slow process, so I didn't stick around for the entire horse-and-pony show. It was as exciting as watching paint dry. Very anti-climatic. I almost LOL'ed when the excavator's very first move was to pick up and drop a large lobby plant, most likely fake, in a huge terra-cotta pot.

In my last blog, I wrote how I made a music video for a Croatian indie band called Superbrands, who made a song that speaks against the Canadian seal hunt. This is the first time that any Croatian band raised their voice against animal cruelty, and this is the first official music video ever that speaks about the seal hunt.

And now a little more info on our whole campaign.
The Croatian indie band Superbrands already has fans in Croatia and other countries because their style overwhelmingly reminds of the splendors of indie music The Smiths, but the similarity does not stop at their music style. The Smiths became known mostly with their song and album "Meat is Murder" which became an inevitable part of the animal rights movement. Superbrands also raise their voice for animals.
Their song "The Hand Strikes Hard" talks about the Canadian seal hunt, and just days after it was recorded, reactions from ashamed Canadians already came across. Even PETA, the world's largest animal rights organization recognized the importance of this song and publicly praised Superbrands on their website.
The controversial music video for the song "The Hand Strikes Hard" was recently filmed near Zagreb. Within the snowy atmosphere which reminds of a perfect Canadian landscape, the band which consists of Hrvoje, Ivan, Vatroslav, and longtime vegetarian, singer Adi, want to highlight the connection of a problem that, although it happens in Canada, is still a matter of all citizens. We must work together to end the brutality of the Canadian seal hunt.
The promotion of the music video "The Hand Strikes Hard" was held yesterday in Zagreb, and along with the promotion of the music video, the band also played a short concert.

About their engagement against the seal hunt in Canada vocalist Adi said: "Some things are simply wrong, and the slaughter of seals in Canada is one of those senseless and inhumane things. Scenes of those insensitive hunters who beat and kill baby seals, all so that European and Croatian 'ladies' and 'celebrities' could satisfy their vanity in someone else's fur to parade through the streets, are strongly engraved in our hearts. The poet Antun Branko Simic said that poets are astonishment in the world, but often they are outrage and condemnation. Thus we could not remain silent because the hand of Canadian hunters really striking strong, cruel and bloody."
Last year, more than 200,000 seals were killed, and Canada plans to start another hunt this year, all in order to get seal fur. Footage of the seal slaughter have shocked the world and showed that helpless seals, aged one week to one year, have been brutally murdered with harpoons and bats, been skinned while most of them were still alive. Many baby seals will be skinned alive this year too, or die trapped under the ice after being injured. These seals must watch other baby seals being beaten to death before the same bloody fate befalls them.
Many countries have already understood the extremely cruel and unnecessary production of seal fur, so they banned the import. Among them is Croatia, who has completely banned the import of seal fur and other seal products since 2006.
This planet and the survival of life on it, which is being threatened by the destructive global warming, needs active commitment and protection from all of us regardless of where we live. That is the only way to prevent injustice, destruction and death. That is why Superbrand's song and music video is such a big step in the fight against seal hunt.

Don Hill, RIP

As tweeted by Moby (see above) and many other notable club veterans, and confirmed to me via a call to Don Hill's who said there is a memorial tonight (3/31) at the club (toast at midnight), nightclub owner and legend Don Hill has sadly passed away. Though details are scarce at the moment, some on Twitter are saying he was "found dead in his apartment" "this morning". Update: someone seemingly in the know says: "He passed away at the hospital. Not in his apartment. It was this evening around 7, not this morning." And Bebe Buell adds (in reaction to the last minute midnight toast), "Don's actual memorial will be the biggest coming together of all the people he has helped+supported-those of us who loved him+knew him well." Murray Hill calls it the end of an era. Miss Guy says he was the nicest person in nightlife.Justine D agrees. I didn't know him personally, but I always liked seeing him hanging around his club that shared his name. He opened Don Hill's in the early 90's and before that managed the East Village's Cat Club (David Bowie & Peter Frampton played there in 1987). "American Hardcore" author Steven Blush (who also worked at Don Hill's) once wrote...
" I booked [GG Allen] at the Cat Club. His most infamous part of the show is to shit on the stage and throw it at the crowd and got thrown out. I got written up in the Village Voice for the show that I had put on. The irony, of course, is that the manager of the Cat Club was Don Hill and I couldn't work any more at that club after that but we always remained friendly....
...Don Hill is the best club owner in New York. After the Cat Club, when that closed, a couple of years later, Don did what he was supposed to do, which was own his own club. Don has the support of the whole club community of the local neighborhood which is unheard of for clubs. The clubs got a great reputation. Sometimes I wish we were bigger and trashier, but then we wouldn't be Don Hill's."
As posted back in August 2010 when it was announced that Don Hill's was closing for renovations, Steve Lewis wrote...
"Don Hill's was born in April 1993 to much flag waving, fanfare and hoopla. The Smithereens set the tone that night and it has since become a virtual rock and roll hall of fame. Don has booked the joint, hired staff, run day to day and night to night operations, he's answered the phones and I suspect that on some nights he swept out the joint. He will now be joined by superheroes Nur Khanand Paul Sevigny. They will come in with mad skills, new energy and cash to redux the place. They will merge with Don to create more of the same but even better."Since re-opening with the new partners on board, the club has in fact been the scene of many high profile and hard to get into events, most notably a fashion week show by Iggy Pop. According to Nur Khan, they also "had LCD Soundsystem booked," but "there were complications with production and stage size so we were unable to do the gig." There were rumors this week that the Strokes would do a show there before or after their sold out gig at MSG (I haven't been able to prove those rumors though, or the show fell through).
